How does cultivating Qi (chi) benefit and unify the mind and body?
In a human body, there are five solid organs and six hollow organs. Externally, a person has four limbs and hundreds of bones. Internally, there are the essence and spirit. Externally, the muscles and bones constitute the body. Outside the internal organs, the tendons and bones constitute the major parts. Outside the tendons and bones, the muscles constitute the major parts. Internally, the muscles, the blood and veins constitute the major parts. Throughout the body, Qi constitutes the major parts. Therefore, the martial art practice aims to cultivate both the Qi and blood.
In order to nourish one’s life, one must nurture one’s Qi. Those that cultivate Qi can enjoy longevity. Therefore, to condition one’s Qi is to follow the flow. For those that know the art of ingesting Qi, they collect Qi. For those that hold their breath, they keep Qi inside. All these are the ways to cultivate Qi.
